After more than a decade of writing life-changing advice, I know when to move on. Here’s what else I learned.

• We have been talking and hearing a lot about ventilators in the last 6 months. Here is a beautiful essay on the history of this marvelous technological advance.

We breathe about 12 to 20 times a minute, without having to think. Inhale: and air flows through the mouth and nose, into the trachea. The bronchi stem out like a wishbone, and keep branching, dividing and dividing, and finally feeding out into the tiny air sacs of alveoli.

• Enya is everywhere!

At 59, Enya has now released eight studio albums. Most popular among them are the earliest: her cinematic 1987 debut, The Celts; 1988’s Watermark, the unlikeliest of pop smashes; and 1991’s oceanic Shepherd Moons, which sold even more. Each mixes the ancient with the modern, folklore and ambience, the human and the electronic, containing hundreds of ornate layers of Enya’s own vocals and rhythms woven like cloth.

• Extraordinary curtailment of massive typhus epidemic in the Warsaw Ghetto – a research article.

Strangely, the epidemic was curtailed and was brought to a sudden halt before winter, when typhus normally accelerates. A far more massive epidemic outbreak was prevented through the antiepidemic efforts by the often considered incompetent and corrupt ghetto leadership and the Herculean efforts of ghetto doctors.
